The university’s history reflects a remarkable journey of transformation and growth. Its beginnings can be traced to 1799, though its modern form began taking shape in 1894 when the Technikum of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen commenced teaching with the Baugewerkschule (building trade school), which later became today’s Faculty of Architecture, Construction and the Environment. In 1895, the Seemaschinistenschule was added, followed by schools of mechanical engineering and ship building.

The university as it is known today was established in 1982 through the merger of four distinct universities of applied sciences in Bremen: the institutions for technology, business, social pedagogy and social economy, and nautics. This consolidation expanded the range of disciplines and opened up opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and research that continue to characterise the institution.

From just 105 students in the building trade in 1894, HSB has grown to serve approximately 8,900 students, making it the second largest scientific institution in the state of Bremen.

Faculty 3: Social Sciences – Offering programmes in social work, health, leisure studies, and political sciences, this faculty includes four programmes with an obligatory international semester abroad. In 2019, the School of Social Work celebrated its 100th anniversary, reflecting a century of social pedagogy education in Bremen.

Faculty 4: Electrical Engineering – Focused on disciplines including Smart Systems, Electronics, Sensor Systems, Laser Engineering, and Electrical Energy Engineering.
