A History Forged in Crisis
The story of NUNM is inseparable from the survival story of naturopathic medicine itself. By the early 1950s, the profession faced near-extinction. The Flexner Report of 1910, commissioned by the Carnegie Foundation, had labeled alternative medical practices as “sect” medicine based on pseudoscience and recommended the closure of schools teaching such disciplines.
The report’s recommendations were widely adopted, resulting in the shuttering of dozens of medical schools, including nearly all naturopathic and chiropractic programs.
By 1955, only one college in North America still taught naturopathic medicine—Western States College in Portland—and it was on the brink of closure. When Western States’ board of directors reversed a decision to maintain its naturopathic program, a group of determined naturopathic physicians took action. Drs. Frank Spaulding, Charles R. Stone, and W. Martin Bleything filed articles of incorporation on May 28, 1956, to establish the National College of Naturopathic Medicine.
The founding faculty, many of whom drove hours from Washington and British Columbia each weekend to teach, scraped together approximately $100,000 in cash and pledges to launch the school.
