Laney College is a public community college located in the heart of downtown Oakland, California. Laney College traces its origins to the Central Trade School, established by the Oakland Board of Education in 1927, and the Merritt School of Business (now Merritt College), founded in 1929. The trade school was later renamed the Joseph C. Laney Trade and Technical Institute.

Oakland Junior College was founded in 1953, with Laney serving as the vocational training centre and Merritt hosting the liberal arts and business programmes. In 1958, the college was renamed Oakland City College. With the establishment of the Peralta Junior College District in 1964, Laney Institute and Merritt College became separate, autonomous institutions in their present-day forms. The current campus opened prior to the 1970–71 academic year.

Laney College offers a wide range of academic pathways, including certificates, associate degrees, transfer pathways, and career and technical education. The college offers associate degrees in more than 20 liberal arts and science fields, along with numerous certificate programmes designed to prepare students for direct entry into the workforce.

Laney is particularly recognised for its strengths in Journalism, Culinary Arts, Mathematics, Machine Technology, and Ethnic Studies. The college’s Journalism faculty have achieved notable recognition; faculty member Dan Kopf contributed data editing to “Burned,” a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigation by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2026.
