The university’s early years were marked by both success and adversity. During the Second World War, the young institution was hit hard, with many prominent members lost, including professors Robert Regout and Titus Brandsma, who opposed Nazi rule and were deported to Dachau concentration camp, where they died.In a notable act of resistance, Radboud’s rector magnificus Bernard Hermesdorf was the only rector in the Netherlands to refuse to have his students sign declarations of loyalty to the German occupiers.

However, many university buildings had been bombed during the war, necessitating new facilities. In 1951, the Faculty of Medical Sciences became the first faculty to move to estate Heyendaal in the southern part of Nijmegen, with all faculties relocating to the new campus by 1988.
